Overview

Australian Moulding & Door Company (AMDC), a specialist manufacturer of bespoke timber mouldings, partnered with Mantalus to transform a highly manual pattern identification process using Generative AI and AWS cloud services. The company frequently receives requests from customers seeking replacement mouldings to match legacy timber profiles no longer commercially available. Historically, identifying a match required staff to visually compare scanned customer samples against a physical catalogue of silhouettes — a time-consuming and often inaccurate process.

Mantalus designed and delivered a cloud-based AI service that allows customers to upload photographs of moulding profiles through a web interface. The system uses computer vision, vector analysis, and Generative AI reasoning on AWS to convert images into vectorised silhouettes and match them against AMDC’s digital catalogue of historic profiles. The platform significantly reduces manual effort while enabling faster, more accurate identification of moulding patterns across Australia.

Customer Background

Australian Moulding & Door Company (AMDC) is an Australian manufacturing business specialising in bespoke timber mouldings, including architraves and skirting boards designed to match historical or legacy architectural profiles. The company’s products are frequently used in renovation and restoration projects where homeowners, builders, or architects require mouldings that replicate older timber profiles no longer produced by large-scale manufacturers.

AMDC maintains an extensive catalogue of moulding patterns developed over many years of custom manufacturing. However, identifying the correct pattern for a customer request traditionally required a manual process. Customers would typically send photographs or physical samples of mouldings to AMDC, where staff would use flatbed scanners or visual inspection to capture the shape profile.

The resulting silhouette would then be manually compared against a printed catalogue of profiles in order to identify the closest match. This process was labour intensive and highly dependent on individual expertise. It also limited the organisation’s ability to respond quickly to customer enquiries and made it difficult to service customers across Australia without receiving physical samples.

AMDC sought to modernise this process using artificial intelligence to automate pattern recognition and dramatically improve response times.

Solution

Leveraging AI on AWS

Mantalus designed a solution leveraging AWS’s cloud services to address AMDC’s challenges. The goal was to automate the ingestion, classification, and mapping of physical samples while ensuring scalability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of integration

Key Components of the POC Workflow

Mantalus designed and implemented a cloud-native AI platform on Amazon Web Services that automates the identification of timber moulding profiles from uploaded customer images.

The solution enables customers to upload photographs of moulding samples through a secure web interface. Once uploaded, the images are stored in Amazon S3 and processed through a serverless image-processing pipeline.

The system first performs image preprocessing using AWS Lambda functions to standardise orientation, remove background noise, and isolate the moulding profile edge. Computer vision techniques are applied to extract the moulding silhouette and convert it into a vector representation.

These vectors are then analysed using machine learning and Generative AI reasoning models hosted on Amazon Bedrock. The models interpret geometric characteristics of the profile and compare them against a digital library of previously manufactured moulding silhouettes.

Embeddings generated from the vectorised shapes are stored within a vector search index, enabling rapid similarity comparisons against AMDC’s existing catalogue. The system returns a ranked list of potential pattern matches to the user interface, allowing both customers and AMDC staff to quickly identify the closest profile.

The architecture leverages a fully serverless design using AWS Lambda, API Gateway, and Amazon S3, allowing the platform to scale automatically as customer demand grows. The solution also integrates securely with AMDC’s internal catalogue database, enabling continuous expansion of the moulding profile library as new patterns are manufactured.

Challenge

Addressing Inefficient Manual Workflows

The project demonstrates how Generative AI and computer vision can be applied to solve niche manufacturing problems that traditionally rely on manual expertise.

Rather than relying solely on traditional image classification, the system converts moulding images into vectorised silhouettes and applies Generative AI reasoning to compare geometric characteristics against a catalogue of legacy patterns.

This hybrid approach combines computer vision, vector similarity search, and Generative AI interpretation to identify architectural moulding profiles with high accuracy.

The architecture also provides a foundation for future capabilities, including automated product quoting, AI-assisted pattern generation for new mouldings, and expansion of the digital catalogue.

By leveraging AWS serverless infrastructure and Generative AI services, AMDC has transformed a manual identification process into an intelligent digital service that improves both operational efficiency and customer accessibility.

Designing the Full IDP Solution: Building on POC Learnings

The Full IDP Solution phase, guided by the learnings from the POC, delivered a full-scale production-ready solution with enhanced capabilities:

Key Features of the solution

  • The solution was built using the following AWS services:

    • Amazon Bedrock – Generative AI reasoning and pattern interpretation

    • Amazon S3 – secure storage of uploaded moulding images and silhouette data

    • AWS Lambda – serverless image preprocessing and vector generation

    • Amazon API Gateway – secure API interface for the web application

    • Vector similarity search (via AWS-managed services) – rapid matching of moulding vectors against catalogue profiles

This architecture provides a scalable, cost-efficient AI platform capable of supporting increasing volumes of customer requests.

Challenges

The legacy moulding identification process presented several operational challenges.

First, the identification process relied heavily on manual inspection. Staff were required to visually compare scanned silhouettes or photographs of mouldings against a physical catalogue of previously manufactured profiles. This process could take significant time and required specialised knowledge to identify subtle differences between similar patterns.

Second, the accuracy of the process depended heavily on the quality of input material. Customer photographs varied widely in lighting conditions, perspective, and scale. In many cases, customers were required to physically mail timber samples to AMDC so that accurate scans could be captured. This introduced delays and created logistical barriers for customers located outside AMDC’s immediate region.

Third, the manual approach limited scalability. As customer enquiries increased, the business faced growing operational overhead in reviewing and identifying moulding profiles. The company needed a solution that could automate silhouette extraction, analyse geometric features, and compare shapes against their existing catalogue.

AMDC engaged Mantalus to design an AI-driven solution that could analyse uploaded images, generate vector representations of moulding profiles, and use Generative AI to identify the closest matching patterns within their catalogue.

Outcomes

The AI-powered moulding identification platform delivered significant operational improvements for AMDC.

Customers can now upload photographs of moulding profiles directly through the web interface and receive suggested matches in minutes rather than days. This eliminates the need to ship physical samples in many cases, allowing AMDC to service customers across Australia more efficiently.

The automated silhouette extraction and vector comparison process dramatically reduces manual effort for AMDC staff. Instead of visually reviewing large catalogues, employees can focus on validating AI-generated match suggestions.

The platform also improves accuracy by analysing geometric characteristics of moulding profiles with greater consistency than manual inspection. Over time, the system becomes more effective as additional moulding profiles are added to the catalogue.

By digitising its moulding pattern library and introducing AI-driven identification, AMDC has created a scalable digital capability that supports faster quoting, improved customer experience, and more efficient operations.

The POC successfully automated the docket processing workflow, proving the feasibility and suitability of a data-centric AI-driven automation approach.
